Jobs Your Garage Is Secretly Doing
No Wonder It's a Mess

Can we talk about garages for a minute? Because I think they might be the most underestimated room in the house.
When we first walk into a garage with a client, almost everyone says some version of the same thing: "I just want to be able to park my car in here again." And I get it, that's the dream. Here's what I've learned after years of doing this. Your garage probably isn't just trying to be a garage. It's trying to be so many different things at once.
Your garage is probably working overtime
Think about what actually happens in your garage.
Maybe it’s where the kids’ bikes and sports gear live, or where you’ve squeezed in a small home gym. For many of our clients, it’s the main entry point into the house—the place where backpacks get dropped, shoes come off, and Costco hauls get unloaded and stored until they’re needed. And this time of year, it’s also where all the holiday bins are waiting their turn.
That’s a lot for one space to handle.
When your garage is functioning as a gym, mudroom, pantry overflow, and year-round storage, it’s no wonder it starts to feel chaotic. It’s not that you’re disorganized. The space simply wasn’t designed to handle everything you’re asking it to do.
Why now is the moment
Fall is really the perfect time to get ahead of this. It’s before the holiday bins need to come out and before the weather turns cold. Because let’s be honest—no one gets excited about reorganizing a freezing garage in December.
A little intention now means that when it’s time to pull out the holiday decorations, you won’t also be shuffling through three seasons’ worth of bins you forgot were even in there. Instead, everything has a place, everything is easier to find, and decorating for the holidays can actually be fun again!
It's about zones, not just storage
The real fix isn’t just more bins, although good containers definitely help. It’s giving everything a zone.
Create a dedicated spot for gym equipment that isn’t competing with the bikes. A true landing zone by the door for shoes, bags, and the things that come and go every day. And a clearly labeled area for seasonal and holiday storage, so those bins aren’t competing for space with everything else.
When everything has a home that makes sense for the way you actually use the space, the whole garage starts to feel easier to manage.
And don’t underestimate the power of labels. They tell everyone in the house exactly where things belong, which means you’re not the only one who knows how to put everything away. Because if Mom is the only person who knows where it goes, even the best-organized system will eventually break down.
And honestly, this is true of so many spaces in a home, not just garages. When we ask one room to be too many things without a plan, it struggles to do any of them well. A little structure goes a long way.
So, if you've been looking at your garage lately and feeling like it's just not working the way you need it to, you're not imagining it. It's probably just wearing too many hats without the support to do it well.
Here's to a calmer, more functional space as we head into the busiest (and most wonderful) time of the year.
